Over the years I have visited Hong Kong at least once or twice a year, either to visiting my sister-in-law and niece, or close friends from Sydney who now work in Hong Kong. Hong Kong is an amazing city that is a story of contrasts and sensory overload. My experience with HK goes back along way, my brother has lived in both Hong Kong and mainland China for the last 30 years working mostly for Reuters and as far back as 1990 I got my first job on The South China Morning Post (SCMP) as a sub on the TV Times, under the then editor David Armstrong (who would, nearly 10 years later, appoint me to the role of Art Manager on The Australian). At that stage the SCMP was a News Corporation masthead and I was given a chance to work during my gap year. Those 3 months allowed me to see inside an industry that has involved my whole family, across the globe. My father had been involved with News Corporation for many years in Sydney, San Antonio and New York, whilst both my brother and sister had worked for the company at one time or another.
