hong kong.

Over the years I have visited Hong Kong once or twice a year, either to see my sister-in-law and niece or close friends from Sydney who now work there. Hong Kong is an amazing city, a story of contrasts and sensory overload.

My connection with Hong Kong goes back a long way. My brother has lived in Hong Kong and mainland China for the last 30 years, working mostly for Reuters. As far back as 1990 I got my first job at the South China Morning Post (SCMP), as a sub on the TV Times under then-editor David Armstrong, who nearly ten years later would appoint me Art Manager at The Australian. The SCMP was a News Corporation masthead at the time, and I was given the chance to work there during my gap year.

Those three months let me see inside an industry that has involved my whole family across the globe. My father worked with News Corporation for many years in Sydney, San Antonio and New York, and both my brother and sister worked for the company at one time or another.
